California Sales Tax Increase Takes Effect on April 1st, 2009
March 26th, 2009
While we were knitting and crocheting, the California legislature passes new sales tax laws. Effective April 1, 2009, the state sales tax rate increases by 1%. In San Mateo county, our new sales tax rate is going to be 9.25%. Nine Rubies will be changing the tax rate on our registers at the store after business on March 31, 2009. We will be collecting the new required sales tax starting on April 1, 2009.
This 1% tax rate increase will expire on either July 1, 2011 or July 1, 2012, depending upon whether the voters approve the proposed Budget stabilization constitutional amendment in a statewide election to be held on may 19, 2009. For complete information about the sales tax increase, you can go to the California State Board of Equalization website at http://www.boe.ca.gov.
If you are considering buying something, might I suggest you hope right over and avoid the new tax rate?
