What’s New at Nine Rubies?
A lot has happened since my last blog post. We’ve been filling our shelves with some great new yarns and accessories, making room for more colors of established yarns, and thinking up some great events for the store!
We’ve received a great new yarn called Cascade Kid Seta. This is the new Kid Seta. It’s softer and of a higher quality than the old Kid Seta (which we do not carry). This yarn is spun in the same factory that Rowan Kid Silk Haze is spun, so you know you’re getting a high quality product. Kid Seta is a blend of 61% mohair, 35% silk, and 4% wool. You can use it for tops, scarfs, capelets….really anything! A popular pattern at the store is the Luxury Scallop Scarf, which is knit length-wise with the mohair, and then cast off using a worsted weight yarn, which produces the ruffles! It’s a simple pattern with a stunning result!
The arrival of Twinkle Soft Chunky had been long awaited. Our idea was to stock a super- bulky yarn that was of high quality and came in a wide range of colors. Upon it’s arrival last week, we couldn’t have been more pleased! The Soft Chunky is extremely soft, 100% wool, and each color is a feast for the eyes! Sudha couldn’t help but cast on right away. She wrote up a pattern for a mini-poncho, and it has quickly become the store’s hottest pattern! You can find it soon under our free patterns section.
Another yarn we completely adore is Blue Heron Rayon Metallic. This worsted weight yarn comes in hanks of 550 yards, and its made up of, you guessed it, rayon and metallic! Because of its fabulous drape, it knits up best into stoles or wraps. The metallic thread really dresses up this yarn. Picture yourself wearing a wrap made out of the Rayon Metallic in the colorway “Deep Blue Sea” over a summer dress, while you drink wine and eat shellfish at an outdoor restaurant overlooking the ocean in the summer!
Lang Yarns has just released a new cotton ribbon yarn called Sol Degrade. We were one of the first stores to carry it, and we can attest to its beauty! A store sample is being knit up at the moment into The Romney Kerchief by Jared Flood. The soft color changes of the Sol Degrade are very beautiful and lend this shawl a summery twist.
Next we have Plymouth Alpaca Baby Grande Glow, a super-soft bulky weight baby alpaca yarn with a shimmery thread running throughout. This dresses up otherwise informal knits. A little sparkle on a dreary Bay Area day. We have also begun to stock new colors in some yarns that we can’t get enough of! Cascade Ultra Pima is by far our favorite cotton yarn. It has a GORGEOUS sheen and keeps its shape very nicely after being knit up. We carry 21 colors of this great yarn now! Melissa recently made an adorable girl’s dress from Beresford Beach by Louisa Harding with this – it’s on display at the store.
In terms of accessories, Lantern Moon bags, soft needle cases, and zippered notion pouches have arrived. It’s important to keep your knitting projects protected. The project bags have no zippers to cause snags – the closure is a magnetic strip! They come in bright, fun colors perfect for spring, and are each lined with a colorful fabric. When not used for projects, these bags would be great to carry your every day essentials around, too! The needle cases can house your double pointed needles, circulars, or straights easily.
