4th of July Sale

Smiley 4th of July

As many of you know, Sudha (one of the owners) and her husband Gopal moved to the US in 1999. US immigration law allows for permanent residents to apply  for US citizenship after 5 years – Sudha and Gopal could have applied for their citizenship 5 years ago but procrastination set in and they finally mailed in their applications this week. The INS will process their application, make sure that they are good people, and then test them on their knowledge of US Civic knowledge over a period of the next six months. If you’re curious as to the questions they ask in the interview, check out the sample questions at:

This year’s 4th of July sale is dedicated to their journey to the US and to integration into the community here. A big thank you to the community around the store which has welcomed Sudha into their fold. Come join us at Nine Rubies and get 15% off everything in the store. Sales merchandise will be an additional 10% off. Store members will get 20%. The sale will be on the July 3rd and 5th. Store hours will be modified during these days – We will close early on July 3rd at 5 pm. We are closed on July 4th and on July 5th we will resume normal hours – 10 am to 5 pm. All About Ravelry!

Ravelry screenshotRavelry is a great website devoted entirely to knitting and crochet. If you’ve heard of it and have been waiting to understand what it is all about, this is the class for you. We are having a 2-session Ravelry class. The first session will cover the benefits of joining Ravelry, getting started with creating your profile, adding your stash and projects using Flickr to upload your pictures. It will also include pattern and yarn searching. The second session will cover selecting favorite designs and queuing your projects. This second session will also cover everything about the forums that you have ever wanted to know. To find the details for this class, please check out our class schedule on our new website. Jocelyn Grayson will be running this class – some of you will remember Jocelyn from when she worked at the store and we are delighted to have her come back and shareher deep knowledge of Ravelry and all it has to offer. The two sessions will be Sundays, July 19th and 26th from 3 pm – 5 pm and the best part is the price for the class – only $25. If you can only make it to one sessionthe fee is $15 per session. Students must have active Flickr and Ravelry accounts. You’ll need to allow at least 4-5 days for your ravlery account to be activated. You can bring a finished project or yarn that we canphotograph and add to your profile. Please bring your laptop if you have one. Just let us know in advance so we can make sure we have sufficient extension cords.

New Look and Feel for the Nine Rubies website!

The new website for Nine Rubies is finally here! Check it out at our regular address http://www.ninerubies.com. We have been working with the very nice folk at Global 1 Design to design the new look and feel for the website. We have kept the most used features of the previous website like the blog and class schedule but have added something BIG!!

Ecommerce

Yes, we have added a whole new online shopping experience to the website. When you click on yarns, patterns, notions you can pick your yarn and actually add it to your shopping cart. Then you can process the entire transaction and pay with your regular credit card just like you can on any website!

For your 24/7 shopping needs, you can now go the Nine Rubies website and shop for your knitting and crochet supplies. And check out the pattern section to see the Reunion shawl from Dolores in pdf format. We can go on about the nifty new features but we want you to go check it out yourself.

Since our website is very new, we appreciate all the links, referrals and feedback that you would like to send to us. Thanks in advance!

Cascade 220 Heather and The Cobblestone Pullover

Cascade 220 Heather is one of our favorite yarns. So much so that we ordered 27 colors of the yarn recently and it arrived on Friday. We were so busy stacking the shelves with the yarn that we haven’t had the time to even tell you about it. The yarn is 100% pure wool, in a 4.5 stitches per inch gauge and perfect for the Cobblestone Pullover by Jared Flood.

Jared Flood Cobblestone Pullover

The yarn originally specified by the designer has been discontinued and the most recommended yarn for the project is now Cascade 220 Heathers. We love the project and the yarn so much that we are planning to have a Knitalong for the project starting on Wednesday, June 24th during our regular Knit Nites. The KnitAlong starts at 6 pm and goes for as long as the Knit Nite. Looking forward to seeing a lot of people who would like to make this for the husbands, brothers, sons or difficult-knit-for men in their lives. After that, the Knitalong will be every alternate Wednesday until everyone who wants to do this project is done.

The pattern is online and will need to be downloaded directly from the Interweave website by clicking on this link. The pattern cost is $5.50 from the Interweave site. If you cannot download this yourself, we would be happy to help you at the store for a small additional fee for the printing of the pattern.

Depending on the size, the sweater requires between 6 and 9 skeins of Cascade 220 making it a very affordable project. Come join us – you’ll need company knitting those large expanses all by yourself!! And maybe you can even do it secretly without them realizing that you’re making this sweater for them at all.
