Latest Books and Magazines

Spring has sprung (at least we hope so), and that means that we have gotten the latest releases from Interweave and Vogue Knitting, and they are filled with beautiful options for warmer weather.

Book Covers

No Sheep for You is the brainchild of Knitty.com’s editor Amy Singer.  She’s allergic to wool, so as you may have guessed from the title, the book’s patterns are made from cotton, linen, hemp and silk.  Everything but wool!  We’ve got some new yarns that would be perfect for these projects.

Many of you probably own the Interweave classics Wrap Style and Scarf Style.  The latest is Lace Style, which may change your mind about lace.  Yes, some of the projects use laceweight yarn, but many are sportweight or even worsted.  Using a heavier yarn is a great way to learn the techniques of lace-knitting while having a good sense of accomplishment.  A big bonus of the book is the reference section in the back, which includes pictorials and instructions for what to do when you miss an increase or have an extra one (even in a row below).  That’s useful information even when you aren’t knitting lace.

We will be receiving our second (!!) shipment of the great new sock book Favorite Socks later today.

None of these books are available through national booksellers yet, so come by and get yours here today!
A couple of other reminders:  We will be open our regular hours on Monday, 2/19.  If you’ve got the day off from work for President’s Day, stop by and knit with us. We’d love to see what you are working on.

We still have space available in our workshop with Knitting Vintage Socks author (and wonderful teacher) Nancy Bush.  It’s on Monday, February 26th, from 9-3.  The cost is $115 (10% off for members).  Don’t miss this chance to spend the day with one of the knitting world’s most renowned teachers.

Last but not least:  Come see us at the knitting extravaganza called Stitches West.  If you are new to knitting or haven’t had the chance to go before, it’s a knitter’s dream.  400 exhibitors from all around the United States, and we’ll be there, too!  We’ll be in booths 804 and 806 with lots of your favorite yarns, and some new ones we’ve never had at the store.  It’s all happening on February 22-25 at the Santa Clara Convention Center.  Check out Stitches West for all the important details.

Mother-Daughter Tea and Book Signing

Girls and Dolls

A few months back, we had a group of knitters come to the store to spend the morning with us.  One of the women mentioned that she had written a book of patterns for little girls and their dolls.  That’s right, matching sweaters for girls and dolls!

We have so many customers with young daughters, granddaughters, nieces, etc. and many of their girls love dolls.  We thought this was the cutest idea ever, so we have arranged to have the author, Eileen Adler come to do a book signing.  We’d like to invite mothers (or grandmothers, aunts or special friends) to bring their young girls to the shop to enjoy an afternoon of darling knitted garments.  Who knows, maybe the girls will knit them up themselves?

Where:  Nine Rubies Knitting, 28 E. 3rd Avenue, San Mateo
When:  March 17, 2007
Time:    3:30 – 5:30 pm

Tea, lemonade and cookies will be served.

More on Stitches – Book Signings!

You’ve gotten the run down on what yarns we’ll be selling, but that’s not all!  We’ve got two great book signings scheduled for the weekend.

First up, the author of one of the most talked about books of the fall, Dominitrix.  Some of you may have met Jennifer at our book signing earlier this fall.  We were her first book signing, and since then, her book has gotten fantastic press.  If you didn’t make it to the event at the store, please stop by and meet Jennifer and have her sign your book.  Rumor has it that she’ll be there in full Domintrix regalia.

Our other book signing is surely the other end of the knitting spectrum.  Knitting maven and sock queen Nancy Bush will be stopping by the booth to sign copies of her wonderful book, Knitting Vintage Socks.  She will also be conducting an all-day workshop at the store on Monday, February 26th.    More information on that is available here.

Nine Rubies at Stitches!

Stitches West! Stitches West! Stitches West!

We are so lucky in the Bay Area to have a great knitting show so close to us. Knitters-in-the-know wait for this event every February to stock up their stashes. They then have beautiful Show-and-Tells after the show so all other knitters can ooh! and aah! over their finds. For those of you lucky enough to have gotten the class notifications and even signed up for different classes, we are almost there.

Stitches West is organized by XRX, Inc, the publishers of Knitter’s magazine and many, many popular books. They know their knitting. They start with an impressive roster of teachers and classes – most have been sold out since December 2006. They also feature a fun marketplace where vendors of all types related to knitting come and show their wares. And we’ll be there – we have 2 booths for our first foray into this event.

The Nine Rubies booth will be featuring many of our favorite yarns

- Iris Schreier’s Art Yarns: Their Cashmere 5-ply, Beaded Silk, Supermerino and many, many more yarns

Beaded Silk 115

- DellaQ‘s fabulous new circular needle holders, knitting bags and more

- Tilli Tomas’s new Flurries and Aspen yarn. We’ve had some in the store and are hopelessly in love.

Flurries in Natural

- Our store-exclusive line Baywood Yarns: We love Joanne Spetz’s colorways and she has been experimenting with some fabulous new yarns. Here’s a picture of something new that she named Fluffy Sheep – it’s so yummy…

And so much more – you’ll have to wait for some of the surprises. Oh, and did we tell you we have two authors in our booth doing some book signings. But that’s a story for another blog.

Mark your calendars! The Stitches West Show is from February 22nd to February 25th. The Market Place will be open

February 22nd: 6 – 9 pm (for people registered for classes)
February 23rd: 10 am – 6 pm
February 24th: 10 am – 6 pm
February 25th: 10 am – 4 pm
Hope to see all of you at the show! For those of you wanting to buy tickets for the show floor in  advance, go here.
